“Boaty McBoatface” was the most popular entry in an online vote to name a new vessel for British Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The research ship, costing $287, is due to be completed in 2019.

The name was suggested as a joke by the former BBC presenter, James Hand. However, it struck a cord with the public and ended up with 124,109 votes making it the clear leader. The story was covered in the press throughout the world and Lord West, the First Sea Lord was interviewed about it on the BBC Today program. In the end NERC decided not to go with the result of the public vote and will be naming the ship RRS David Attenborough after the famous British broadcaster and naturalist.

In a final twist a remotely operated sub-sea vessel which will accompany the ship will actually be named Boaty McBoatface.

The name Boaty McBoatface was too good to be left to fade away so we’ve resurrected it as an online gift shop.
